Product Description

Flashback® Red Prismatic Reflective Tape is bold red by day and shines back at night. Its acrylic microprismatic surface sends headlight and torch light straight back towards the source, so posts, gates, edges and equipment stand out clearly in the dark.

Independently measured at over 120 cd/(lx·m²) when new, it is a self-adhesive tape for indoor and outdoor visibility marking where no particular certification or approved material is specified. Red is the colour people already read as a warning, which makes it a natural choice for marking hazards and obstructions.

Why Acrylic Prismatic?

Prismatic reflective tapes use a face film of acrylic, PVC or PET. Ours is acrylic, the film generally chosen for long-term outdoor use because it resists UV and weathering and holds its colour and clarity. PVC and PET films are often cheaper, and PVC is more flexible, but both are generally less resistant to prolonged sunlight.

The trade-off is stiffness. Acrylic performs best on flat, rigid surfaces. For curves, corners and edges, our more flexible red glass bead reflective tape is the better choice.

Red is read as a warning at a glance, which makes it a natural choice for marking hazards, edges and obstructions. Popular uses include:

Suitable surfaces may include clean, dry and smooth metal, painted metal, rigid plastic, glass, sealed wood and other stable, non-porous surfaces.

Adhesion depends on the surface condition, preparation, texture and application temperature. Test a small area before full installation.

For bollards and barriers, use only as supplementary visibility marking on privately owned items where no formal specification applies. It should not replace prescribed reflectors, approved traffic-management products or required safety components.

Test data

The coefficient of retroreflection (RA) shows how much light the tape returns towards its source. The higher the figure, the brighter the tape looks to someone near the light, such as a driver behind their headlights.

Values are in cd/(lx·m²), measured in two orientations: x (along the length of the tape) and y (across it).

RA values measured by SATRA Technology Centre to CIE 54.2 on a production sample, report no. SPC2048844/67550/1. Measurement uncertainty ±8%. These are typical values for new material from the sample tested, not a specification or guaranteed minimum. Dirt, abrasion and weathering reduce reflectivity over time. Prismatic material is orientation sensitive, so performance at wide angles can vary with the direction the tape is applied. No performance class or standard is claimed.

How to apply
  1. Check that the surface is suitable and test a small area.
  2. Remove dust, dirt, oil, wax and loose material.
  3. Allow the surface to dry completely.
  4. Apply when the surface and air are above 10°C.
  5. Measure and cut the required amount of tape using sharp scissors or a suitable knife.
  6. Peel back a small section of the release liner.
  7. Position the tape and apply it gradually using firm, even pressure.
  8. Check that the edges are firmly attached before exposing the tape to handling or outdoor conditions.

Adhesion depends on the surface, preparation, texture and application conditions. Do not apply over rust, loose paint, oil, moisture or heavily textured surfaces.

Certification & product guidance

This product is intended for visibility marking where no specific approval or certification is required.

It is not supplied as ECE104/R104-approved vehicle conspicuity material, certified traffic-sign sheeting or reflective PPE. The retroreflection values shown are informative measurements on a production sample, and no performance class or standard is claimed.

Public-highway, roadworks, traffic-management and prescribed sign applications may require particular materials, colours, layouts or approvals. Check the applicable requirements before ordering for a regulated application.

Frequently asked questions

How reflective is this tape?
Its coefficient of retroreflection was measured by SATRA Technology Centre to CIE 54.2. At the standard 0.2° observation and −4° entrance angle it measured 122.9 to 135.5 cd/(lx·m²) when new, depending on orientation. Full results are in the Test data section and the technical data sheet.

Why are the figures lower than white or yellow?
This is normal for all red reflective materials. The red colour filters out much of the returned light, so red always measures lower than white or yellow in the same construction. If maximum brightness matters more than colour, white or hi-vis yellow will reflect more light.

Does the direction I apply it matter?
At most viewing angles the difference is small, but prismatic tape is orientation sensitive. At wide angles, such as light hitting the tape from well off to the side, the result can be noticeably higher in one direction than the other.

Is this reflective tape suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. It is intended for indoor and outdoor visibility marking. Performance and service life vary according to the surface, preparation, installation, handling and exposure conditions.

What is the difference between acrylic and PVC prismatic reflective tape?
Acrylic prismatic film is generally chosen for long-term outdoor use because it resists UV, weathering and yellowing well, but it is stiffer and best suited to flat, rigid surfaces. PVC prismatic film is more flexible and conforms to curves more easily, but generally ages faster in prolonged sunlight. This tape uses acrylic. For curved surfaces, consider our more flexible red glass bead reflective tape.

Can I use it on bollards or barriers?
It may be suitable for supplementary visibility on clean, smooth, privately owned bollards or barriers where no formal standard applies. Do not assume it meets requirements for public-highway, roadworks, traffic-management or safety-critical equipment.

Is this tape ECE104 compliant?
No. Where regulated HGV or trailer conspicuity markings are required, select approved ECE104/R104 reflective tape.

Can it be used on clothing or fabric?
No. This self-adhesive tape is intended for suitable rigid surfaces and is not reflective PPE material.

Can the tape be cut to size?
Yes. It can be cut using sharp scissors or a suitable knife. Take care when using cutting tools.

Can the tape be removed?
Yes, although adhesive residue may remain and some surfaces or coatings could be affected. Gentle heat may help soften the adhesive, but always test first.
