Product Description

Flashback® ECE104 Reflective Conspicuity Tape is an approved self-adhesive microprismatic reflective tape for regulated vehicle conspicuity marking on HGVs, trailers and commercial vehicles.

The material is type approved to ECE Regulation 104 and each roll carries the approval marking printed along its length. A sealed edge construction resists lifting and moisture ingress, and the pressure-sensitive adhesive bonds securely to clean, dry, rigid vehicle surfaces.

Supplied in 50mm width in the three approved colours, cut to any length from 1 to 50 metres.

Uses & suitable surfaces

Intended for regulated vehicle conspicuity marking on rigid sided commercial vehicles and trailers, including:

- HGV conspicuity marking
- Trailer side and rear marking
- Lorry and rigid vehicle outline marking
- Box trailers and other rigid sided trailers
- Articulated vehicles
- Fleet vehicle visibility marking
- Commercial vehicle edge and outline identification

Colour and placement: Red or yellow at the rear, and yellow or white on the sides. White is used for front marking where fitted. Markings are normally positioned as close to the edge of the vehicle as practical. Colour, placement and coverage are set by the regulation and vary with vehicle type, so check the requirements applying to your vehicle before ordering.

Suitable surfaces: Clean, dry aluminium, stainless steel and automotive paint on rigid sided vehicles and trailers. Adhesion varies with paint condition, surface texture, temperature, cleaning chemicals and application pressure. Test first on painted, repaired, coated, textured or high value surfaces.

Not suitable for: Curtain sides or other flexible vehicle surfaces, which need a flexible curtain-grade ECE104 tape. Also not suitable for clothing, fabrics, washable garments or PPE, or for dirty, wet, greasy, loose or flaking surfaces.

How to apply

1. Check the correct colour, placement and quantity required for your vehicle.
2. Check the surface is suitable and test a small area.
3. Remove dust, dirt, grease, wax, polish, oil and loose material.
4. Allow the surface to dry completely.
5. Measure and cut the tape to the required length.
6. Peel back a small section of the release liner.
7. Position carefully, then apply gradually using firm, even pressure.
8. Pay particular attention to edges and corners.
9. Allow the adhesive to bond before washing, pressure washing or heavy exposure.

Apply to surfaces above +10°C for best initial adhesion. Adhesion depends on the surface, preparation, texture and application conditions. Do not apply over rust, loose paint, oil, moisture or heavily textured surfaces.

Removal: warm gently with a hairdryer or heat gun, peel slowly at a low angle and clean any remaining adhesive with a suitable adhesive remover. Always test first, as removal may affect weak, old, repaired or poorly bonded paintwork.

Certification & product guidance

This material is type approved to UNECE Regulation 104 (ECE104), which sets the performance requirements for retroreflective markings fitted to vehicles of categories M, N and O.

As required by the regulation, each roll carries the approval markings printed at intervals along its length: the "E" mark and state code, the class of marking material, and the approval number. Approval is held by the material manufacturer. Flashback Industries Limited supplies, converts and distributes this approved material and does not itself hold the type approval. Where documentary evidence is needed for an audit or specification, quote the approval number marked on the product.

Construction: Polycarbonate (PC) face film, modified solvent acrylic adhesive, full longitudinal heat-sealed edges, 0.45mm total applied thickness.

ECE104 marking requirements depend on vehicle weight, category, use, country and placement. The buyer or installer is responsible for ensuring the tape, colour, placement and installation meet the requirements applying to their vehicle. Check before fitting.

Adhesion and service life depend on correct installation, surface preparation, surface condition, weather exposure, cleaning method and washing frequency.

Flashback Tape accepts no liability for incorrect fitting, misuse, surface damage, removal damage, regulatory non-compliance or use outside the intended application. Download the full technical data sheet (PDF).

Frequently asked questions

Is this tape ECE104 approved?
Yes. The material is type approved to ECE Regulation 104 as Class C conspicuity marking material, and each roll carries the approval marking printed along its length.

Which vehicles need ECE104 reflective tape?
Regulation 48 requires ECE104 conspicuity markings on most newer goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and trailers over 3.5 tonnes, with rear markings on vehicles over 2,100mm wide and side markings on vehicles over 6,000mm long. Requirements depend on vehicle category, age and dimensions, so check the rules for your vehicle.

What colour should I use?
Red or yellow for the rear, and yellow or white for the sides. White is used for front marking where fitted. Check the placement requirements for your vehicle before applying.

Is this suitable for trailers?
Yes, for rigid sided trailers, subject to correct colour, placement and installation. It is not suitable for curtain sides, which need a flexible curtain-grade ECE104 tape.

Can it be used on clothing or fabric?
No. This is not reflective PPE material and is not suitable for clothing, flexible fabrics or washable garments. For garments, use sew-on or fabric-specific reflective tape.

Can the tape be cut to size?
Yes. It cuts with sharp scissors or a suitable knife. We also cut to your chosen length before dispatch, from 1 metre upwards.

Can the tape be removed?
Yes, although adhesive residue may remain and some surfaces or coatings could be affected. Gentle heat helps soften the adhesive. Always test first.

Do you offer bulk discounts or custom logo tape?
Yes. We quote for trade pricing, fleet supply, repeat orders and bulk enquiries. Custom logo ECE104 rolls are available for larger orders, from 24 rolls per colour in 50mm x 50m. Use the Trade & Bulk Orders tab, or email sales@flashbacktape.co.uk
