A simple, chemical-free barrier for your pots and planters. Copper slug tape is a self-adhesive copper strip you wrap around pots, containers, raised beds and greenhouse staging to help keep slugs and snails off your plants. No pellets, no pesticides, just peel and stick.
Sizes
- 20mm x 4m: a handful of pots
- 20mm x 25m: lots of pots, containers and staging legs
- 50mm x 12m: a wider band for raised beds, tubs and cold frames
Where to Use It
- Plant pots and containers, including terracotta and plastic
- Vegetable tubs and window boxes
- Raised bed edges and cold frames
- Greenhouse staging, table legs and shelving
It works best on containers and raised structures, where there's a clear edge to wrap and slugs have to climb to reach the plants.
How to Apply It
- Clean and dry the surface. Brush off soil and let damp pots dry first so the adhesive grips.
- Make a complete ring. Wrap the tape all the way round with no gaps, overlapping the ends slightly.
- Press it down firmly along its full length, especially the edges.
- Check inside first. Make sure no slugs or snails are already in the pot or under the rim.
- Stop leaves bridging the gap. Trim back leaves and stems that touch the ground or a nearby wall, or slugs will simply climb across.
- Check it now and then. Replace any sections that are damaged or lifting.
Getting the Best Results
Copper tape is best used as one part of your slug defences, not the only one. In an RHS trial, copper tape and other barriers on their own didn't reduce slug damage to lettuces, although the RHS hasn't ruled copper out. Combine it with other humane methods:
- Pick slugs and snails off by torchlight on mild, damp evenings
- Water in the morning rather than the evening
- Encourage natural predators such as birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs
- Grow especially vulnerable plants in pots, where tape is easiest to use
Garden Use Only
This tape is made for gardening as a slug and snail barrier. It is not specified or tested for electrical, conductive, shielding, guitar, craft electronics or circuit use.
FAQs
Is copper slug tape safe around pets and children?
It's a non-toxic physical barrier with no chemical pesticides.
Does it kill slugs?
No. It's a deterrent barrier, not a poison.
Will it stick to terracotta?
Yes, if the pot is clean and fully dry. Very rough or dusty surfaces won't grip as well.
Can I use it for electronics or stained glass?
No. It's for gardening only and isn't specified for electrical or craft use.
